400,000 Lobster Heist Hits Massachusetts Coastline
A daring heist has shaken the Massachusetts coastline, as 40,000 pounds of lobster meat, valued at approximately $400,000, vanished from a Taunton warehouse. The intended destination of the stolen seafood was Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota. Unless authorities swiftly apprehend the perpetrators, the lobster will likely be sold on the black market, where its value would plummet to $200,000, according to Dylan Rexing, CEO of Rexing Companies, the freight broker coordinating the shipment.
This brazen crime bears striking resemblance to a scene from a Netflix heist movie. Interestingly, just ten days prior, a large shipment of crab was stolen from the same facility, sparking concerns about a coordinated effort by sophisticated thieves. The allure of lobster and shrimp lies in their lack of serial numbers, rendering them difficult to track and easily sold on the black market.
A disturbing trend has emerged, as traditional organized crime rings appear to be partnering with cybercriminals, effectively creating an IT department for older crime groups. Chris Spear, president of the American Trucking Associations, testified before the House Judiciary subcommittee, highlighting the evolution of cargo theft.
“Straight theft has been around since trucks have been on the road,” he noted.
