Abu Dhabi Signs Key Agreements To Boost Renewable Energy And Decarbonize Aluminium Production

In a significant move towards decarbonisation and renewable energy expansion, several key agreements have been signed in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), Dubal Holding, and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) are at the forefront of this initiative. These agreements aim to transform aluminium production by incorporating cleaner energy sources, aligning with global efforts to achieve net zero by 2050. EGA is set to become a leader in the aluminium industry’s drive towards sustainability.

The signing ceremony, attended by high-ranking officials including Dr Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan and Homaid Al Shimmari, marks a pivotal moment in Abu Dhabi’s energy strategy. A Power Purchase Agreement was made for the supply of power from Al Taweelah until 2049, which will enhance the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

Taqa Transmission is set to acquire EGA’s transmission assets, significantly upgrading interconnection capacity. This upgrade, expected to be completed by 2027, will facilitate greater flows of clean energy to EGA’s sites.
