Cyprus Lags Behind In EU’s Renewable Energy Surge

The European Union witnessed a notable surge in renewable energy production during the third quarter of 2025. Renewable energy sources accounted for 49. 3 per cent of the net electricity generated across the EU, marking a 3. 8 percentage point increase from the same period in 2024. This upward trend, however, masks considerable disparities among member states.

Cyprus, in particular, lagged behind in its adoption of renewable energy sources for electricity generation. The island nation ranked fifth from the bottom in terms of renewable energy share, with only France, Slovakia, Czechia, and Malta performing worse. Malta, once again, found itself at the bottom of the list.

Cyprus’s own data revealed significant month-to-month fluctuations in renewable electricity generation during the summer months. The figures stood at 512. 39 GWh in June, rising to 655. 94 GWh in July, before dropping to 640. 49 GWh in August and further declining to 544. 89 GWh in September. These numbers highlight the need for Cyprus to bolster its renewable energy production.

As the EU continues to make strides in its energy transition, Cyprus must redouble its efforts to keep pace with its counterparts. The information in this article was first published in “cyprus-mail.
