HLRS To Upgrade Supercomputing Capabilities With AMD-Powered Herder System

The High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) is set to upgrade its supercomputing capabilities with the introduction of Herder, a new system that will feature a combination of CPUs and GPUs from AMD. Specifically, Herder will comprise 1488 Instinct MI430X accelerators and 372 Epyc processors of the upcoming Venice type, which boasts the Zen 6 architecture and 2-nanometer technology from TSMC. This new system marks a departure from the previous Hunter system, which utilized Instinct MI300A accelerators that integrated CPU and GPU on a single carrier.

The Instinct MI430X accelerators will come equipped with 432 GByte of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4), capable of transmitting 19. 6 TByte → s, resulting in a system-wide total of nearly 643 TByte of HBM4. Herder’s architecture will feature two CPUs and eight GPUs on a motherboard from HPE’s new Cray GX5000 platform. The system will also employ liquid cooling, with the waste heat being utilized to heat the Vaihingen campus of the University of Stuttgart.
