Meta’s ambitious foray into mixed reality technology has hit a snag, as the tech giant has reportedly delayed the launch of its codenamed ‘Phoenix’ mixed reality glasses from 2026 to 2027. This postponement is attributed to the company’s desire to refine the product’s features, prioritizing high-quality and accuracy over a hasty release.

According to a memo obtained by Business Insider, Meta’s metaverse leaders, Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns, acknowledged that rescheduling the release date will provide “a lot more breathing room to get the details right.” They emphasized that the company will not compromise on delivering a “fully polished and reliable experience.” The Phoenix mixed reality glasses are designed with safety features and are tethered to a puck, which powers the device.

Despite some concerns among leaders about the puck’s functionality, it was retained to maintain the glasses’ lightweight and comfort, as well as prevent overheating. In a recent meeting with CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Reality Labs leaders received feedback on their plans for 2026, which he stressed should focus on making the business sustainable and taking extra time to deliver experiences with higher quality.

Zuckerberg cautioned that prolonged development periods should not be used as an opportunity to add more features or take on additional work.

Meta has reportedly postponed the release of its mixed-reality glasses, codenamed ‘Phoenix’ from a primary goal in 2026 to 2027.
