Millions of Amazon Prime customers are now receiving refunds as part of a landmark $2. 5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The case focused on allegations that Amazon employed deceptive tactics to enroll individuals in Prime and made it difficult to cancel. The settlement, a significant development in consumer protection, comprises $1 billion in civil penalties and $1. 5 billion in customer refunds.

Eligible customers will receive varying payouts, with the maximum amount being $51 per person. Some recipients have reported receiving smaller amounts, such as $31. Most eligible customers do not need to take action to receive their refunds. Amazon has been sending emails since November, offering payment options via PayPal or Venmo, with notifications continuing through December 24. If customers do not claim their payments electronically, checks will be mailed to their default shipping addresses.

Customers who have not received a payment notice by December 24 will have another opportunity to claim their refunds in 2026, when the FTC launches a formal claims process. The FTC has warned consumers to be cautious of scams, emphasizing that neither Amazon nor the FTC will request money, personal information, or make threats related to this settlement.
