New 160MW Solar Plant Begins Operations On Former Coal Mine Site In Maryland
In the rolling hills of Garrett County, Maryland, a new solar plant has begun to shine. CPV Renewable Power and Harrison Street Asset Management have marked the start of commercial operations at their 160MW solar project, aptly named CPV Backbone Solar. This ambitious undertaking has transformed a reclaimed, decommissioned coal mine site into a thriving hub of renewable energy.
The project’s genesis dates back to 2020, when construction began under the watchful eye of Vanguard Energy Partners. Throughout its development, CPV worked in tandem with local stakeholders to ensure that the project’s benefits would be felt for years to come. Mike Resca, executive vice president of CPV Renewable Power, noted that the company seeks out energy communities where their projects can have a profound impact.
Garrett County, with its unique blend of need and opportunity, proved to be the ideal location. The CPV Backbone Solar project is more than just a feat of engineering; it’s a boon to the local economy. The plant is expected to generate significant tax revenue for Garrett County, cementing CPV’s commitment to being a responsible and invested partner.
This latest addition brings CPV’s portfolio to five operating wind and solar projects, with a development pipeline that boasts an impressive 4. 8GW of potential.
