Southeast Asia’s Space Sector Takes Off: A Region Poised For Leadership

In the sweltering heat of Bangkok, a peculiar sight caught the attention of visitors at the Thai Space Expo. Amidst the futuristic space suits and model rockets on display, a humble package of Thai basil chicken stood out. This was no ordinary snack, however, as it was the same type of vacuum-sealed package that had recently been launched to the International Space Station by Charoen Pokphand Foods, Thailand’s largest food company.

The unexpected exhibit reflected the growing enthusiasm within Southeast Asia’s space sector, which was on full display at the expo. The event, held in a bustling shopping mall, drew attendees from emerging space nations such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. They gathered to showcase the region’s fledgling space industry and explore its vast potential.

Optimism was palpable among the attendees, with many believing that Southeast Asia was poised to take a leadership role as a space hub. Candace Johnson, a partner at UK investment firm Seraphim Space, noted that the region presented numerous opportunities for growth and innovation. “Southeast Asia is perfectly positioned to take leadership as a space hub,” she said.

“There are a lot of opportunities.” Thailand, in particular, was making significant strides in its space ambitions.
