The 2025 Asteroid Alert

First seen in New Scientist:

In a brief, yet intense moment, the possibility of a devastating asteroid impact on Earth spiked in 2025, sending ripples through the scientific community. The asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, was first detected in late December 2024 by astronomers, who estimated its size to be between 40 and 90 meters wide. Initially, its trajectory seemed to pass through a narrow window that included Earth, prompting calculations that it had a 1-in-83 chance of striking the planet in 2032. As astronomers made more detailed observations during the first months of 2025, the chances of impact appeared to increase, peaking at a 1-in-32 chance at the beginning of February. This hypothetical impact would have released energy equivalent to megatons of TNT, potentially devastating a city and its surroundings.

The asteroid’s potential threat was deemed significant enough to warrant a rating of 3 on the 10-point Torino scale, which assesses the likely consequences of an impact. The United Nations-affiliated bodies sprang into action, coordinating global telescope observation campaigns and discussing the possibility of an asteroid-deflection mission. The world’s space agencies, including the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA, worked together to refine their understanding of the asteroid’s ← →
