Uber Accelerates Self-Driving Ambitions With New Robotaxi Prototype
Uber’s Foray into Self-Driving Cars Perseveres In a recent announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Uber revealed its continued pursuit of self-driving car technology. The ride-hailing company is collaborating with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and autonomous vehicle company Nuro to develop a driverless robotaxi prototype.
This new vehicle, based on Lucid’s Gravity EV, is expected to debut in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year, joining the ranks of Waymo and Zoox robotaxis already operating in the region. According to sources, including a report by Gizmodo, on-road testing of the prototype commenced at the end of last year, facilitated by Nuro’s existing driverless testing permits with the California DMV. The partnership aims to offer the Level 4 robotaxi prototype in all areas where Uber has a presence, pending successful testing and implementation.
The forthcoming robotaxi, though unnamed, boasts an interior design akin to the Gravity EV, with seating for up to six adults and a spacious hatchback trunk. Notably, the vehicle features touchscreens that enable passengers to customize their ride, control the climate, activate heated seats, and select music preferences.
