University Of Glasgow Unveils Virtual Reality Kiosk For Immersive Museum Experiences

According to gla.ac.uk:

The University of Glasgow has unveiled its inaugural [un]box Virtual Reality kiosk, a self-contained portal to previously inaccessible worlds. This innovative technology enables visitors to immerse themselves in museum exhibits, examining artefacts at remarkable proximity and from multiple angles. The £6. 2million Museums in the Metaverse project, funded by the UK Government’s Innovation Accelerator programme, has created incredibly accurate 3D models of Cultural Heritage collections.

Visitors can don a headset to explore virtual environments and interact with these digitized objects. The ‘museum in a box’ concept allows the general public to engage with the MiM platform using the [un]box, prior to its official online launch. The public’s reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors marveling at the opportunity to examine Virtual Reality artefacts like Dolly the Sheep’s skull or rare fossils.

The first [un]box has opened at the Glasgow Science Centre for a two-week period, until 19 December 2025. During this time, young people over 10 and adults of all ages can utilize the kiosk to visit a space station and examine precise 3D models of precious natural history artefacts. These include the skull of ‘Dolly the Sheep’ from the National Museums of Scotland and rare fossils and minerals ← →
